Dollhouse Decorating

Miniature Decorating Ideas |Articles on decorating dollhouses and the history of this artform

I have had a life-long love affair with dollhouse miniatures, and careers in art education and interior design. I hope to combine these life experiences to help other miniature enthusiasts get more out of this wonderful hobby we enjoy, a hobby that often reaches the level of an art form. Susan Downing

A World of Beauty

Ron Hubble is known in the miniature world for his attention to detail and his ability to make the period in which he works come to life. One source of inspiration has been the stately homes of England, especially as designed by Robert Adams. This eighteenth-century architect created many such manor houses. One manor house is of special interest to Ron – Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, in the English Midlands.

One of Ron’s best-known projects came into being because of Lin Wen-Jen, founder of the Miniature Museum of Taiwan, visited the 1996 IGMA show in New York. Ron was manning his booth when Mr. Lin came by and admired the work exhibited. Mr. Lin was familiar with Ron’s work, having been impressed with the Palace of Versailles miniature at the Barry and Carole Kaye Museum of Miniatures in Los Angeles. He subsequently commissioned Ron to create an English style salon and ballroom to be exhibited at his Taipei museum. Ron spoke of the result. “The layout was my own design, but I was inspired by the entrance hall at Kedleston.

Catalog As Museum Exhibit

Ron’s website is one of the most imaginative I have seen. For someone who is such a master of color, I was surprised to see everything in black and white. Then I hovered over a thumbnail image and color blossomed in the picture. Now click the thumbnail, and it becomes a full-sized image in vibrant color or subtle pastels. Click on an object in the frame and details, price and shopping cart link appear in a caption box. Outstanding! What a classy way to present a sales site!

Master Classes

Another important part of Ron’s beautiful world are the master classes he teaches with Judy Taylor. This year’s schedule includes Passages de Paris, Seville: The Jewel of the Crown and Hodgson Drawing Room. When you get to the website, click on the Classes tab for details.
