Tudor Dollhouse Toilets

When thinking about Tudor dollhouse toilets, remember that almost all hygienic functions in the Tudor era took place in the bedchamber or an adjacent alcove. Castle dwellers and the merchant class had choices. They could have a garderobe, for instance. a sort of privy that hung on the outside of the building. Or they could use closed stools and chamber pots. But for most of the population, human waste was disposed of in the most convenient places: out back in the garden or out front in the street. Dollhouse enthusiasts need not be too graphic about the subject. We have choices too.

The Stettheimer Dollhouse

Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks was a favorite watering hole of the New York City rich and famous. In the summer of 1916, the upper-class children had a fund-raising bazaar to benefit local children affected by a polio epidemic. Some pestered their parents for contributions, others pestered the neighbors. Carrie Stettheimer, the youngest of three daughters, got wooden boxes from a grocer and created a dollhouse with found objects and scraps. When the family returned home to their West 58th Street mansion, Carrie began her life-long work – The Stettheimer Dollhouse.

Miniature “Classical Music” theme room box

Theme Accessorizing

It’s easier than you think. A theme can be anything you want it to be: a collection of beer mugs, shades of the same color, a hobby or sport. The construction on the right has a classical music theme, The “box” is actually a 4″ deep tray that held type in a print shop. Pictures, books and miniature musical instruments are set in the spaces formerly used to hold various sizes of lead type. How many composers do you recognize?
