Mid-Victorian furniture design continued the practice of reviving and blending old styles. Add to that, increased world trade introduced middle-eastern and Asian elements to the mix. No particular style dominated. Rather, furniture designers drew inspiration from Elizabethan, Neoclassical and other periods. And it could all be done with machines.

Flora Gill Jacobs, an internationally recognized authority on dollhouses who spent her adult life blissfully awash in minutiae, including tiny, lavishly appointed mansions and an ornate Mexican villa that came with its own chapel (very small priest included), died on May 31 in Washington. She was 87 and lived in Chevy Chase, Md.

The Catherine Palace Amber Room found on The Magical Dollhouse
When Kathleen Savage Browning announced the acquisition of the Catherine Palace, I was pleased that a work by Robert Dawson would be at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center. I run across his name often, when searching for article ideas and thought this would be a good time to learn more about him.

Victorian Era Venetian Bedroom found on Apartment Therapy
Puddling refers to an amount of extra drapery length that is spilled or “puddled” onto the floor. In the days when fabrics were rare and expensive only the wealthy could afford them; only the truly rich could afford extra material to just lay on the floor! Puddling added opulence and style, providing the hosts a not-so-subtle way of showing guests just how well off they were. And as some of the richest aristocrats in the world, the Venetians puddled.
