Josje Bouwts Slaapkamer Chandelier

This is from a Josie Bouwt post in her blog on September 29, 2011. It was titled “Lights, Camera, Action!” and is one of many reasons why I find her blog invaluable. On “A Beautiful World,” Josje not only shows you her gorgeous miniatures but how she brought them about. A periodic visit to this blog is always a “look and learn” experience for me.

I was taken with Josie’s description of the chandelier: “When this was all finished I felt the room needed more lights. I didn’t want to wait until the next dolls house fair so I rummaged through my drawers and found an old silver … well, I’m not sure what it was, but I could call it a ‘jewelry finding’. I played around with it a bit, using some glass paint and silk string and made it into a very eclectic light to hang above the chest of drawers. It is a bit odd, I admit, but I rather like it”.

Here’s a link to another post I wrote on Josje Bouwts’s work: Fine Dining.

Xandra Dekker’s Cabinet Dollhouse

Xandra Dekker’s “All About Dollhouses”

The Dutch to English machine translation of the caption under this blogs cover photo reads:

“ON THIS WEBSITE YOU FIND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE DOLLHOUSE HOBBY, MINIATURE, DOLLHOUSES, WORKSHOPS AND MORE … “

This is not an overstatement. “All About Dollhouses and Miniatures” is outstanding. The information is primarily European, which puts artisans doing period projects closer to the source than we US bloggers seem to provide.

Maybe it just seems that way, because Ms. Dekker is focused on one geographic area, while I find myself flitting all over the map and through the centuries.

It is obvious that Ms. Dekker has done her research, giving one a true sense of authenticity. There are so many links to other great sites. Check out Ms. Dekker’s “Blogs I Follow” for access to more useful information.

Travel Blog

Xandra Dekker also has a travel blog, with many of the posts about tropical climes. That’s understandable, I guess if you have ever experienced winters in Northern Europe. I’m sorry if I sound smug, but that’s the way it is for escapees from Cleveland who found paradise in Florida.

Enjoy exploring both of Xandra Dekker’s blogs.

Sara Rothe – The Other Cabinet Dollhouse

On April 2, 1743, Sara Rothe was the high bidder on 3 dollhouses created by Cornelia van der Gon, a leading dollhouse builder of the time. The incentive seems to have been to scavenge these dollhouses for their contents to improve the two cabinet dollhouse Rothe already owned. Apparently, it worked out. The dollhouse in the Franz Hals Museum is amazing. The one at on exhibit at the Gemeente Museum at The Hague equally so.

Sara Rothe Painted Room

I couldn’t resist showing this picture by itself. It’s from yesterday’s post about Sara Rothe’s cabinet dollhouse, now on exhibit at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, The Netherlands. What color!

Incidentally, I got 5 comments on FB confirming that this is the miniature replicating her Amsterdam town house. Another cabinet dollhouse is at the Gemeente Museum at The Hague.
