Miniature Decorating Ideas |Articles on decorating dollhouses and the history of this artform

MyBlog

I have had a life-long love affair with dollhouse miniatures, and careers in art education and interior design. I hope to combine these life experiences to help other miniature enthusiasts get more out of this wonderful hobby we enjoy, a hobby that often reaches the level of an art form. Susan Downing

Don’t Neglect The Dollhouse Ceiling

One of the most overlooked parts of a dollhouse or room box, a space that can make your setting outstanding, are the ceilings. Start with the standard plain white ceiling and experiment with various textures. Mix coffee grounds, glitter or sparkles into that white paint. Create interest by raking various tools through whatever coating you have chosen while it’s still damp. Or paste painted sheets of sandpaper on the ceiling.

Try Wood

Wooden flooring can be used. Square tiles can be cut from padded white envelopes, then decorated … or not. Faux tin ceilings come in glue-up sheets. Basswood can be shaped and boxed properly to use as crown molding or to create a coffered ceiling.

Lighting

Lighting can create great effects and is abundant on the Internet. Or you can make your own fixtures. I have seen beautiful chandeliers made from multi-hook fish hooks and beads or jewelry findings. And don’t forget applique medallions around the chandeliers. YouTube has many how-to videos on electrifying dollhouses and making light fixtures.

How about a cathedral ceiling? Does that old room box you want to do something with really have to have a flat top? Put a steeply pitched roof on it which will offer opportunities to create interesting angles. The garret of a Victorian dollhouse might have some interesting angles connecting walls to the inside of the attic roof.

Need Inspiration?

Inspiration need never be in short supply. I just Googled the long-tailed keyword “angled living room ceilings,” then clicked on “More Images” and 15 screens, 20 images per screen, of wonderful ideas that I can reduce from real rooms to 1:12 scale.

Now I have the wonderful problem of choosing which of these great ideas I can turn into my next project.
