Miniature Decorating Ideas |Articles on decorating dollhouses and the history of this artform

MyBlog

I have had a life-long love affair with dollhouse miniatures, and careers in art education and interior design. I hope to combine these life experiences to help other miniature enthusiasts get more out of this wonderful hobby we enjoy, a hobby that often reaches the level of an art form. Susan Downing

Little Morton Hall – The Results of Rich Commoners Showing-Off

Little Morton Hall

I first got interested in the Tudors when I saw Charles Laughton play Henry VIII. What a smarmy villain he was! Then came the architecture and dollhouse miniatures. Through all of the research I have done, one structure stands out as the most improbable: Little Morton Hall

Fantasy Moving Van

A friend of mine is moving her office. This picture is embedded in the email with her new contact information. I searched the Internet Image function for it’s source and Google’s best guess is “moving sale.” When I clicked on “All sizes,” six uses on the Internet came up: four in Asia, one in Slovenia, and one in the U.S., also related to an office move. Whatever! I love this picture and whether it’s a miniature, drawing or toy, it’s inspiring. Anyone for a toy store room box?

Karate Outfit 1:12 Scale

One of my grandson’s – the 6 years old – is taking karate classes. So what’s a grandmother to do? Make a 1:12 scale karate outfit, of course, complete with karate soft shoes, numbchucks, boards to be broken with the famous karate chop, and the belt degrees sign. It’s a perfect accessory for a modern boy’s bedroom.

As I made such a big deal in a post about showing the scale of your work on a photo, I had to use this picture. I would ike to say my dinged-up right index finger was a result of an amateur using those numbchucks, but the cuts came from something more prosaic – doing fine work on tough leather with an X-acto knife.

Shiny Object Photography

Before getting into Steven L. Van Dyke terrific tutorial, I forgot to mention in the previous post the importance filling the frame of the photo with your miniature item. Look at any example of small-object photography. There’s very little space
